The publishing industry has been revolutionised by a new technology, Docutech.
This Rank Xerox machine was originally made for car manuals and can have
text and diagrams.
Now the exciting part: each book costs about about 2 pounds, even if you
get only 10 copies done.
This means you can publish just enough for reviewers cheaply and run off
more as and when needed (the system is quick!)
You can even advertise off the page or by direct mail and get more copies
as the orders come in!
The books look perfectly acceptable, though choice of font, size etc. is a
little limited.
Some suppliers:
Xerox have entered the market with "Book in Time" charging around 2c a page/75c for a colour cover so your 200 page paperback would be about five dollars or three pounds. All printed in 48 hours!

There's an upcoming technology IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) where
printers are connected to the internet and you download a word processor
document to it as if the printer is attached to your computer.
There was an article on this in The Times Interface supplement Nov 5 97 and more detail here!
Those who prefer to keep printing inhouse, will love my client's system
